Tanjina: our Newcastle web-designer intern

We've had a student from Northumbria University working as a web design intern with us for just over 3 weeks now, and we thought it was time to ask her about her experience.

A bit about you?

My name is Tanjina Rahman and I am currently studying BSc Information Studies at Northumbria University, situated in Newcastle. My hobbies include painting and sketching, which is one of my interests that I have developed since school. During my leisure time I spend some time producing pictures. Designing and making clothes is also another hobby of mine, which I have developed since school. I have used the skills that I have gained in D.T Textiles during school to help me make clothes. Also I am widely read and very much enjoy fiction books. On the whole, I am very creative. I also have common hobbies to other people such as watching TV, listening to music and surfing on the Internet.

As part of my university module called Organisational Studies, I am working full-time in web design agency Peacock Carter, which is based in Gateshead, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Has your web design placement been of any use to you?

I want to pursue a career in the web design field in the future; working at Peacock Carter enabled me to build on my basic skills and knowledge that I have learnt in University into real life projects for clients - I have been designing and making websites using HTML/CSS which I greatly enjoyed. I also tested an online broker website which is currently under development. Alongside all more practical web design work, I have also sketched designs for websites that need redesigning.

An area that was quite new to me was search engine optimisation (SEO), which tracks down the rankings of clients’ websites in search engines...and then working to improve these rankings.

What have you enjoyed most about the placement?

From all the work I’ve done in the last 3 weeks, I enjoyed designing the homepage of a website directory and I also enjoyed converting PDF files into HTML using HTML/CSS to redesign pages of a client’s existing website. I have also experimented with Photoshop (graphical software) to create graphics for my personal blog, online at tanjinarahman.co.uk.

We'll hopefully hear a little more from Tanjina in a few weeks, towards the end of her design placement with us. Meanwhile, we're still looking for a web design intern to join us for a week or two before Christmas this year.
